Ken defends EMA!

Ahead of today’s protest and lobby to save the EMA (details below) Ken Livingstone said:

“The abolition of Educational Maintenance Allowances will deter thousands of teenagers in London from learning new skills and gaining valuable qualifications and work experience.

“The combination of EMA cuts and huge hikes in tuition fees threaten to deny opportunities to future generations of Londoners and entrench inequality.

“Now more than ever, students in London need our support to oppose these hugely damaging cuts yet the silence from the Mayor is deafening. It’s time Boris Johnson put the interests of students before the interests of the Conservative Party.”

The Tory attacks on young people will be a key theme throughout the day at the forthcoming Progressive London conference with a range of student and youth speakers including:

• Kanja Sesay, NUS Black Students’ Officer

• Jody McIntyre, Journalist and political activist

• Josie Long, Comedian and Student

• Laurie Penny, Journalist

• Christine Quigley, Chair – London Young Labour

• James Mills, Save EMA Campaign

• Mary Robertson, SOAS Occupation

• Cat Smith, Chair – Compass Youth

• Aaron Kiely, Kent Occupier

• Conrad Landin, Sixth form activist and blogger
