NUS Officer slams London Met Privatisation

Earlier this week it was reported that a private company is poised to take over London Met University’s operations and services in a £74m deal, which threatens to deeply damage the university’s reputation and the experience of students and staff alike. These outrageous plans have been widely condemned by trade union and student leaders.

Aaron Kiely, NUS Black Students’ Officer has spoken out against the move, calling on students to protest against this privatisation on the NUS demo in November:

“Private companies should have no place in the running of our universities. Our universities are public services and they should be run for students not for profit. Privatisation will simply lead to more services being slashed, corners being cut and the lowering of wages, all in the name of making money for business and at the expense of students and workers.

“It is crucial that NUS unites with trade unionists in opposing this disastrous move which is part of a wider Tory vision for education: cuts, rising student debt, job losses and privatisation.

“Students will be demonstrating their anger against the privatisation happening at London Met when we march on Parliament on 21 November.”
