Venezuelans choose their President in elections on October 7. With less than one month left before Venezuelans go to the ballot box, a survey of recent opinion polls shows significant leads for Hugo Chavez in the race to be Venezuela’s next president.
But there are concerns that the democratic will of the people will not be respected by elements of the right-wing opposition, with growing fears that they may seek to overturn the results by anti-democratic means.
Venezuela has been at the forefront of the progressive changes that have taken place in Latin America over the past decade, with its policies for ‘Socialism of the 21st Century’. The government of Hugo Chavez has won more lections than nearly any other government in the world as a result of social policies to drastically reduce poverty and inequality by sharing the nation’s oil wealth. Women’s equality and anti-racism have also been at the centre of this change, in addition to a commitment to international justice, peace and solidarity.
Come to this rally to show your solidarity!
