On the 1st of September 2012 the fascist English Defence League attempted to stage a provocative and hateful rally in the London borough of Waltham Forest.
In a magnificent display of unity more than 4000 people of every religion, race, age, sexuality and gender staged a counter demonstration under the banner of We Are Waltham Forest and sent the Nazis packing.
Now the EDL have announced that they are returning to the scene of their humiliation, now as part of a motley collection of racists, thugs, football hooligans and outright fascists badged “Unite the Right”.
This is nothing less than an outright, sustained assault on one of the most vibrant and exciting multicultural communities in the world by a gang of fascist thugs.
The English Defence League (EDL) is a racist and fascist organisation dedicated to attacking Asian people and Muslims. Islamophobia or bigotry against Muslims is as unacceptable as any other form of racism. Its aim is to divide us by making scapegoats of one community, just as the Nazis did with the Jews in the 1930s. Today the EDL target Muslims. Tomorrow it could be Jewish people, Hindus, Sikhs, black people, lesbians and gay men, travellers or Eastern Europeans.
What we achieved on September 1st we must achieve again but this time as part of a national movement to make the message so clear even the EDL cannot mistake it.
Join the local community and Unite Against Fascism’s national mobilisation to say ‘No Fascists in Waltham Forest’. Gather from 11am in Walthamstow Town Centre.
