Progressive Students National Forum 2014

Leading the fight against austerity, racism, climate change and war
Saturday 4 October, 10am – 5.30pm, University of London Union

Join us for a day that will feature high profile guest speakers and student leaders from across the country to discuss ideas and develop a progressive action plan for the student movement. All progressive students are welcome to attend and contribute.

The Tories have relentlessly driven down living standards of many, caused misery for millions, and created a society of food banks, loan sharks and zero-hours contracts – students must continue to fight back and resist.

Austerity, rising student debt & privatisation are hitting students and education hard. But this July the government made a U-turn on their plans to sell off the student loan book following a hugely successful campaign – proving that protesting works.

Racist scapegoating of immigrants, Muslims and Black communities is being whipped up to distract attention from the Tories failing economic policies which are making people poorer and destroying our public services. But students have successfully fought back against the racist tide – stopping the deportation of 2,500 international students and preventing a college in Birmingham from banning the Muslim veil – showing once again that campaigning works.

All forms of bigotry are also rising with women, disabled people, LGBT and Black communities facing more hate-crimes and attacks on hard-fought for rights.

We live in dangerous times with new wars, climate change, Israel increasing its oppression of Palestinians and US imperialism stepping up its military presence in Africa. But people power is proving there is an alternative with the advance of twenty first century socialism in Latin America with democratically elected governments putting people before profit.

The Progressive Students National Forum on Saturday 4 October, will be a key opportunity for student activists from across the country to come together and discuss the next steps in building a fighting student movement that takes on the Tories, austerity, racism climate change and war. With the General Election just months away, the year ahead provides the student movement with a key opportunity to make a big impact on national politics.
