Myriam Kane: NUS must be loud and proud in defending international students

By Myriam Kane, NUS International Students’ Campaign Committee

The sad reality is that Theresa May’s disgusting, racist Tory government is making international students, immigrants and people of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean heritage less safe.

Since the Brexit referendum last June hate crime has increased by 100%. 1 in 3 Black, Asian and minority ethnic people have either experienced or witnessed racial abuse over the past 7 months.

These facts should be causing a national outcry.

Instead, earlier this month the Tory government voted in the House of Commons for EU nationals living in the UK to be used as bargaining chips throughout the Brexit negotiations. The Tories are refusing to guarantee EU immigrants basic rights – leaving millions of people worried about their uncertain futures. For EU students it makes planning for the future impossible – who knows what the situation will be in 2 years’ time?

I want NUS to be vocal, loud and proud in defending international students and immigrants throughout the Brexit negotiations. We have to fight for our rights and not allow the Tories to throw them away.
